Storm Season Cleaning Checklist for Atlanta Homes
Spring brings severe thunderstorms to metro Atlanta, and late summer and fall can bring heavy rain from tropical systems moving inland. A little preparation keeps your home easier to clean up, and a clear plan afterward gets it back to normal fast.
Before the Storm
- Clear gutters, downspouts and patio drains so water moves away from the house.
- Bring in or secure patio furniture, cushions, planters and grills.
- Move rugs, boxes and electronics off basement and garage floors.
- Check that your sump pump runs, if you have one.
- Put a doormat and a towel bin at every entry so mud doesn't travel through the house.
- Take photos of each room for insurance records.
After the Storm: Safety First
Stay out of standing water, especially if it may be touching outlets or appliances, and call a professional for flooding, sewage backup or structural damage. This checklist is for everyday storm mess: tracked-in mud, wet entryways, leaves and dust. General information only, not safety or insurance advice.
Room-by-Room Cleanup
Entryways and floors
- Let mud dry, then vacuum before mopping so you aren't spreading it.
- Wash doormats and rugs, and dry them completely.
- Wipe baseboards and door frames near every exterior door.
Kitchen
- If the power went out, check the fridge and freezer and throw out anything that's been too warm.
- Wipe the inside of the fridge before restocking.
- Clean counters and the sink, and run the dishwasher empty if water sat in it.
Bathrooms and basements
- Dry any damp areas quickly; Georgia humidity makes mildew grow fast.
- Run fans or a dehumidifier. The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60%, ideally 30% to 50%.
- Wash or replace damp towels and bath mats.
Windows, sills and patios
- Wipe window sills and tracks where water and pollen collect.
- Hose off patio furniture and let it dry in the sun before bringing cushions back out.
